Chief of MMDA's Baklas Billboard arrested for extortion
 February 3, 2012

A Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) official was recently dismissed from his post for allegedly extorting money from a billboard operator.

Arrested was Engineer Narciso Yamat, consultant and chief of "MMDA Baklas Tarpaulin and Billboard Team" in an entrapment operation after receiving 30,000 pesos in marked money inside a fastfood restaurant in Mandaluyong City.

Yamat was accused of extortion and harassment by Adworld Advertising, a billboard operator and a member of the Outdoor Advertising Association of the Philippines (OAAP), the industry association of billboard operators nationwide.

Yamat allegedly threatened Adworld that if they do not pay 50,000 pesos per billboard per month, their tarpaulins will be removed and their billboards will be dismantled even in the absence of a court order and despite all their billboards having complied with regulations.

MMDA is said to be studying the filing of an administrative case against Yamat.
