Digital signage, as a medium, will not only blaze trails inadvertising technology, it may well have the potential for socio-civic use.
A blogger who attended the recent 2nd PhilippineForum on Digital Out Of Home Media, Ms. Jane Uymatiao, pointed out the thingsshe picked up from the forum:
- Digital media is used as a platform to announce missing persons reports abroad.
- Digital media is a creative medium where socio-civic issues like domestic violence were showcased, providing information as to how to deal with these cases.
- Digital media beats static media in that a different number of ad campaigns can be featured on one single LED billboard, eliminating the space that traditional static media occupies.
That being said, while Ms. Jane Uymatiao herself is not infavor of outdoor media, she has highlighted the potential uses, advantages andbenefits of digital signage. In light of the recent exhortation by Sen. Pia Cayetano for the government to up the ante in the fight against prostitution, the use of digital media for this suggested campaign is potentially crucial.
Outdoor media has recently come under fire by lay people andconsumers because of their visual annoyance. Billboards have also been accusedof being distractions to the driving public, especially men. There may be asilver lining and a redemptive opportunity right here, however. Let’s explorethe potential of giving space to government causes and socio-civic issues, andinstead of being consumer annoyances, OOH may soon redeem itself in the public eye.
