THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority filed criminal charges against 10 companies for erecting billboards without permit.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said the respondents violated the National Building Code.
The charges were filed before the office of Makati Assistant Prosecutor Alex Bagaoisan.
The MMDA gave owners of the billboards 15 days to correct the violations, but they failed to comply. Some of the billboards were previously ordered for demolition by the Makati City government.
“Our inspection teams composed of men from the DPWH, MMDA and local government units discovered that most of the billboards have no permit, and violated safety requirements,” Tolentino said.
The filing of complaints resulted from MMDA’s “Operation Roll Down, Baby” launched last May.
The team inspected billboards on EDSA to determine whether it complied with the NationalBuilding Code.
"We will sustain this campaign to ensure public safety and structural compliance,” the MMDA chief said.
Meanwhile, the DPWH ordered the immediate revocation of all clearances covering the installation, erection and maintenance of advertising signs located outside the right-of-way of national roads.
